Lyons Ferry, LSRCP, USFWS Lyons Ferry Hatchery was built in 1982 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Lower Snake River Compensation Plan. The fish hatchery is named after the family that operated a ferry service here in the late 1800s. Lyons Ferry is the only hatchery program for Snake River fall chinook salmon and is also a major production center for spring chinook and steelhead. At the Tucannon fish hatchery satellite facility, located on the Tucannon river, about 50 wild and 50 hatchery adult spring chinook are trapped and shipped to Lyons Ferry for spawning and rearing. Lyons Ferry Hatchery also raises about 320,000 rainbow trout each year for stacking low-land lakes in the Tucannon River Basin in eastern Washington and streams in northern Idaho. |

- Columbia River Fisheries Development Program was authorized by the Mitchell Act, Public Law 79-676, 16 U.S.C. 756-757. The program was designed to mitigate for fishery losses caused by hydroelectric system development in the Columbia River Basin. This program uses the facilities and personnel of the State fisheries agencies in the Pacific Northwest to protect and enhance the salmon and steelhead resources in the Columbia River Basin. To date, the fisheries agencies involved in the program have operated twenty hatcheries and rearing ponds, over seven hundred irrigation screens, and more than forty fish ladders, and have conducted hatchery improvement studies.
