Lyons Ferry Hatchery was built in 1982 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Lower Snake River Compensation Plan. The fish hatchery is named after the family that operated a ferry service here in the late 1800s. Lyons Ferry is the only hatchery program for Snake River fall chinook salmon and is also a major production center for spring chinook and steelhead. At the Tucannon fish hatchery satellite facility, located on the Tucannon river, about 50 wild and 50 hatchery adult spring chinook are trapped and shipped to Lyons Ferry for spawning and rearing. Lyons Ferry Hatchery also raises about 320,000 rainbow trout each year for stacking low-land lakes in the Tucannon River Basin in eastern Washington and streams in northern Idaho.
