Interactive Stream Maps have several purposes: browse the maps of Washington and Oregon for registered sites to see what data and images others have submitted, register a stream site, and provide data and information about that site. We recommend for the best viewing of the maps that you maximize the size of your browser window (e.g., resize the window, reset the properties of you monitor to higher scale, hide unnecessary browser toolbars).

Basic Features

SalmonWeb uses the "Interactive Stream Maps" as a way to visualize biological and other data about the region. There are four levels of clickable maps of Washington and Oregon based on watersheds.

You can browse all four levels of maps. Registered sites show on map Levels 1-3 as colored dots and on Level 4 maps as a symbol (e.g., colored dot or push pin). Click on the Level 1 or 2 map to view the full size image.

Level 1 · Level 2 · Level 3 · Level 4

Level 1 - State: At the state level, the map includes both Washington and Oregon. The state level map includes major cities, populated areas, and watershed boundaries (black) based on EPA Accounting Unit.

Level 2 - Watershed: At the watershed level, the map includes the major streams (blue), major cities, populated areas, major roads (red), county boundaries (yellow) and sub-watershed boundaries (black) based on EPA Cataloging Unit.

Level 3 - Sub-watershed: At the sub-watershed level, the map includes lakes (solid blue areas) and more streams as well as major cities, populated areas, and major roads. This map includes the EPA Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC).

Level 4 - Local: The local level map is generated when a stream site is registered. This map is generated by the U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER Map Server (tiger.census.gov/).

Register a New Stream Site

Interactive Stream Maps allows groups or individuals to register a stream site that they will monitor and about which they will provide information. There are two ways to identify the location of your stream site: using the clickable maps or providing the exact latitude/longitude. For both location options, start on the Interactive Stream Maps page.

  • Using the Clickable Maps: Click through the levels of the Interactive Stream Maps until you get to the sub-watershed map (Level 3) that includes the stream site you would like to register, and then click on the desired location of your stream site on the sub-watershed map.

    Adding B-IBI Metric Data

Data submission forms for B-IBI Summary Metrics. Before choosing this data submission option, you should complete all the steps in processing your sample including sorting, identification, calculating B-IBI metrics for your site (see B-IBI section for further details). Currently, the SalmonWeb only supports the Puget Sound Lowland (B-IBI) Protocol. The B-IBI score of your stream is computed for you based on this protocol.

    1. Sample Collection and Identification

The first Adding B-IBI Metric Data page will prompt you to fill out the following fields before continuing:

Click Next Page button to continue.

    2. Replicates

This page is the second Adding B-IBI Metric Data page. It provides a form for entering the results from your three sample replicates. These are the results of each replicate before averaging. There are three entry boxes for each metric:

The Taxonomic ID Level of your data sample determines which Replicates fields are filled out. Follow the links below for identification level specific definitions of each metric. Entering Replicate data is optional, but should be filled out completely if you choose to enter it. Click Next Page button to continue.

    3. Summary Metrics and B-IBI Ranking

This page is the third Adding B-IBI Metric Data page. It provides a form for entering the final calculations from your sample. Enter the B-IBI Summary Metric value and the corresponding B-IBI Metric Score. See the Taxonomic ID Level specific Scoring Criteria for: Species/Family, Species, Genus, Genus (pre 1999), and Family.

Click Next Page after you have finished filling out all the fields and have made all the selections for ranking.

    4. Review Data

You now have the opportunity to review all the information you have entered for B-IBI Data. Review the accuracy of the information you have entered. Use the Previous Page buttons to return to the previous pages to make changes, or click Submit Data button. After clicking Submit Data, you will not be able to edit your data.

Your B-IBI score will be computed for you as well as the condition of biological integrity based on the following table.

10 Metric B-IBI Score 5 Metric B-IBI Score Stream Condition
    SpeciesSpecies/FamilyGenusGenus
    (pre 1999)
    Family
    46-50 23-25 Excellent
    38-44 19-22 Good
    28-36 14-18 Fair
    18-26 9-13 Poor
    10-16 5-8 Very Poor

See Interpreting B-IBI Scores for more information about B-IBI scores as a measure of biological condition.

Technical Details about Map Generation and Data Sources

All maps are created from publicly accessible digital data. Attribute values were altered for line, polygon and point features for compatibility across different locations, but none of the geographic information has been altered. Stream and watershed boundary data is from the StreamNet database, a 1:100,000 scale database for the Pacific Northwest. For more infomation, see Pacific Northwest River Reach Files. County lines, Roads and Highway information is pre-processed Washington Gap project roads coverages and/or Census Bureau TIGER-line files. All other data are based on USGS databases. For more information, see Oregon Spatial Data Library and/or USGS GeoData.

Watersheds are drawn at different scales depending on the "level".

Due to the resolution of different computer screens, this scale may vary, so actual viewing scale will be device dependent.

Watersheds at levels 1, 2, and 3 are drawn using a Lambert projection system for the Northwest. This was chosen for several reasons: the east-west orientation of the mid-latitude region; end-use is presentation; and compatibility with other layers.
