Bio

Tyler McCraney joined CBR in 2025 after working for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in Red Bluff, California. Tyler is a self-described “fish nerd” with research and teaching experience at federal agencies, public universities, and non-governmental organizations in Alaska, California, Indonesia, and Taiwan. He holds a B.S. and a M.S. in Fisheries Biology from Cal Poly Humboldt, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Research Interests

Tyler uses big data from biological databases to investigate the ecology, evolution, and biodiversity of fishes. He is broadly interested in understanding how genetic, phenotypic, and species diversity varies over short- and long-term timescales with respect to ecological interactions, climate change, and habitat fragmentation. Tyler’s research at CBR focuses on the development of complex, mechanistic models and online decision-support tools for salmon fisheries management in large, regulated river systems.
