Notes on the DART Smolt Index Dataset
Data Disclaimer: These data are preliminary and have been derived from various sources. For verification and/or origin of these data, contact the operators of the Fish Passage Center.
Combined lamprey juveniles is a combination of pacific lamprey ammocoetes, brook lamprey ammocoetes, unknown lamprey ammocoetes, pacific lamprey macropthalmia, and unidentified lamprey species. Caution should be used with interpreting lamprey juvenile collection counts at Lower Granite because of the possibility that lamprey may escape the sample tank before being sampled.
Rear Types: DART does not contain individual rear type counts for Smolt Index, only combined counts. Please refer to Fish Passage Center for individual rear type counts.
McNary Dam: Since 2003, operations at McNary Dam result in sampling every other day during the spring, approximately April 1 through June 30.
Little Goose (LGS) and Lower Monumental (LMN) dams: Since 2006, samples taken between April 1st and the beginning of juvenile fish transportation (usually in early to mid-May) at LGS and LMN represent incomplete smolt monitoring data. Only limited sampling to determine fish condition is conducted during this period. LMN samples every 3-4 days for a few hours. LGS samples for one 24-hour period, generally every 3-5 days.
Lower Monumental (LMN), John Day (JDA) and Rock Island (RIS) dams: No sampling in 2022.
See FPC Smolt Monitoring Program (SMP) Metadata for details about the Smolt Monitoring program and data. See the FPC Smolt Rearing Dispositions section for details about which individual Rear Type catoregories are possible by Species, Year, and Data Collection Site.
